SCREENINGS

WHAT OUR SCREENINGS DO

At Maximum Learning, screenings serve as the first point of call for families who are concerned about possible learning difficulties, learning disabilities, or barriers to learning.

Our role is to provide an informed, educationally grounded starting point. Through careful observation and screening, we help identify learning patterns, strengths, and potential hurdles that may be impacting a child’s progress. This initial clarity allows families to better understand what may be happening and what steps, if any, should follow.

Where screenings indicate that further investigation may be helpful, we guide parents toward the appropriate professionals for formal assessment or diagnosis, such as educational psychologists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, or other relevant specialists.

Importantly, families are not left waiting or unsupported in the meantime. While referrals are underway, we offer practical coping strategies, learning adjustments, and management approaches that can immediately support the child at home and in learning environments. These strategies are tailored to the child’s needs and aim to reduce frustration, build confidence, and stabilise learning while next steps are pursued.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

Questions and concerns around learning screenings are completely normal. For many families, the idea of testing brings up fear, uncertainty, or worry about labels. To create clarity and peace of mind, we’ve addressed some of the most common misconceptions we encounter when parents consider screenings for their children.

Low intelligence

Learning difficulties are not a reflection of intelligence.

Many children with learning challenges are highly capable thinkers whose strengths simply aren’t reflected by traditional teaching methods or assessments.

Laziness or Lack of Effort.

Struggling to learn is not the same as not trying

When children appear disengaged, it is often because the way information is presented doesn’t align with how they process or retain it.

They're Only Academic

Learning screenings look far beyond schoolwork and marks.

They help us understand attention, processing style, emotional regulation, and learning behaviours, not just academic performance.

Caused by Bad Parenting

Learning differences are not caused by parenting.

They are often neurological or developmental in nature and can occur in any home or educational setting, regardless of support or structure.

They're Visible or Obvious

Many learning challenges are not immediately visible.

Bright, compliant, or quiet children are often overlooked, which is why early screening can be so valuable in preventing frustration and confidence loss later on.
